Despite the title, the play is very much an ensemble piece. What it does have, however, is real clarity of thought and depth of characterisation, confirming Icke as a majorly talented adaptor, and a director who keeps histrionics in check. Characters are also vividly redefined: the Professor and his young wife, Elena, whose rural visit causes so much havoc, are normally seen as tragically mismatched; here they clearly still enjoy an actively rumbustious sex-life and, when Vanya tries to shoot the old Prof, Elena is the first to interpose her body.
The Cedars. Icke’s biggest interference is to anglicise the Russian names: here’s Johnny, not Vanya. Uncle Vanya is a study of ennui, unfulfilled desires and the misery of rural isolation. But even as the characters moan about the tedium, it never feels tedious. Still, Icke can cast a magic spell over theatre-goers: this Uncle Vanya is three and a half hours long, and often slow-paced and static.
At one point, Harvey’s Vanya, clearly very drunk, falls to the floor with such visible melancholy that it adds a depth to his ongoing monologue. You also, thanks to four hefty wooden pillars, are frequently thwarted from seeing anything at all – injecting the audience with the frustration the characters experience, might be the charitable interpretation. The production’s technical aspects are just as adeptly handled. The actors’ talents are heightened by Stehlin’s excellent direction. And for all his ecological fervour, the visiting doctor, Astrov, is also a drunken buffoon who, in his cups, engages in a disastrous bit of DIY carpentry with the Chaplinesque Waffles. Paul Rhys treads the tragi-comic knife edge of Johnny – queasy creepiness, trembling neediness, thwarted nobility – while his niece, the lovelorn Sonya, is played with tenderness by Jessica Brown Findlay. But the joy of the production lies in its total-theatre mix of words, music, mime and symbolism. When it was announced that Robert Icke – who adapted and directed last year’s modern, gut-punching Oresteia – was repeating the trick with Chekhov, I expected something… strange.
