Despite the title, the play is very much an ensemble piece. What it does have, however, is real clarity of thought and depth of characterisation, confirming Icke as a majorly talented adaptor, and a director who keeps histrionics in check. Uncle Vanya is a study of ennui, unfulfilled desires and the misery of rural isolation. But even as the characters moan about the tedium, it never feels tedious. Still, Icke can cast a magic spell over theatre-goers: this Uncle Vanya is three and a half hours long, and often slow-paced and static.

At one point, Harvey’s Vanya, clearly very drunk, falls to the floor with such visible melancholy that it adds a depth to his ongoing monologue. You also, thanks to four hefty wooden pillars, are frequently thwarted from seeing anything at all – injecting the audience with the frustration the characters experience, might be the charitable interpretation. The production’s technical aspects are just as adeptly handled. The actors’ talents are heightened by Stehlin’s excellent direction.
