Roosevelt “Rosey” Washington (Daniel Francis), is a middle-aged African American who won’t take any nonsense from his white colleagues. by Tony Tortora There are lots of interesting ingredients in ‘Cops’ and the successful laugh out loud moments are satisfying, however there is a lack of emotional direction and consistency that undermines of the overall power of the play. User Rating: Be the first one ! Costume Supervisor – Lorna Sherry Set in 1957 ‘Cops’ tells the story of 4 very different Chicago police officers who, despite their differences, need to find a way to work together. Foxy (Jack Flammiger), the young officer who loves to sing Elvis and provoke his colleagues, is so convincingly obnoxious it set my teeth on edge, so this isn’t a play that has rose tinted views about the liberality of youth either. The cops in question share the stage for the most part and bounce off each other as we learn something of their lives and personalities, including the job in hand. Four policemen, Stan, Rosey, Eulee, and Foxy share an office in-between stake-outs in …

But ultimately the racism of this world is simply part of the context, and is not a central theme of the story. Daniel Francis Book for spring 2020 shows at Southwark Playhouse.

As much comedy as it is drama, with wonderfully written characters, razor-sharp, witty banter, authentic spiky dialogue, and explosive scenes of emotional power and soul-baring poignancy, ‘COPS’ examines masculinity and racism whilst offering a touching message about how love conquers all and blood being thicker than water. James Sobol Kelly (Eulee) is the most successful at portraying a three-dimensional character, thanks mainly to the fact that the playwright has given him a mostly sedentary role as the precinct’s lieutenant who will do anything for a quiet life.
Outside their office the world is changing.

Paul “Eulee” Ulasiewicz (James Sobol Kelly), a 50-something widower who cares for his elderly father and doesn’t have much of a personal life, leads a team of mismatched cops who are trying to catch a local mobster: Helping out Eulee’s team on stakeouts is Irishman Joseph Hurley (Ben Keaton), a cop perceived to be so stupid that no one wants him on their team. Production Manager – Adam Burns Harry “Stan” Stanton (Roger Alborough), grumpy, in his sixties and presumably nearing retirement, has been on the force forever despite allegations of corruption earlier in his career. Inspired by real-life events in the often brutal and corrupt world of 1950’s Chicago policing and Mob violence, this powerful new play lays bare masculinity and racism with authentic characters, razor-sharp comic banter and soulful poignancy.

Running Time 120 mins including interval

Please note this show contains smoking and strong language. This is a time when racism and misogyny were rampant, and that intolerance threads through the piece.
So, Eulee sticks him on the roof of the warehouse they’re staking out.

Civil Rights. Nothing is considered significant enough to develop as a theme.

It is as though he realises that the dialogue is inclined to be contrived and that the various scenes refuse to build to climaxes, but he and the ensemble make the most of this ‘student’ play from which I am sure Tony Tortora will go on to pen more believable work.

Three of them spend much of the play loudly arguing with each other, which gets tiring on the ears. Southwark Playhouse starts the new year Stateside as it transports us over to the Windy City.

Cops, Southwark Playhouse – Review However, it soon falls into a 'thriller by numbers' format,… Civil Servant. Eulee, perhaps not surprisingly, struggles to get this group to work together effectively, and after several bungled stakeouts, and no arrests, the Chicago Police Department’s internal affairs team takes an interest. Change ). Chicago. With wit, humour and razor-sharp, fast-moving dialogue, this emotionally powerful and poignant new play movingly reveals the men’s personal stories. Mass consumerism. A promising play, undermined by its slow pace and an over-reliance on clichés, but with a good cast to keep it ticking over. Cops

Their task is simple; grab the witness before the mob stop him from talking. Composer & Sound Designer – Simon Slater

Southwark Playhouse There are broader plot elements, involving the mob, bringing an informant in, and trying to root out an internal mole, but these bits feel throw-away, often relegated to the domain of farce, as the play shifts to focus on the more personal stories of our 4 protagonist cops. Four officers are assigned to the operation, all coming from different backgrounds and bringing their own life experience into play. 15 JAN – 1 FEB 2020

During the 70s there was a skit for an office Christmas party that is still talked about today. Surveillance ops is the only time police lookout Hurley (Ben Keaton) makes an appearance, although it’s not entirely clear why (at least to this reviewer). Jack Flammiger And as the core team realises what’s going on, they start to suspect each other, each positing their theories as to why Eulee, Stan, Rosey or Foxey could be the mole. Sex is everywhere…. It just sits amongst a lot of other stuff such as the older cop Stan’s memories of the Irish in Chicago, the Yankees baseball team, crosswords, Russian satellites, Elvis Presley and doughnuts.
