( Log Out /  She had a very interesting personality, and we all felt sympathy for her as she struggles to overcome her horrible life and to accept her new, fresh life with Susan, ‘The War I Finally Won’ was one of the most beautifully written book I’d ever read.
As for myself, with my readers block hopefully cured, I’m planning to read another book by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley: I’m going to add The War I Finally Won to my reading list. They are the shabbiest of the London children and no one wants them as wards. Totally agree! Susan has been mourning the death of her best friend and swears she doesn’t want the children, but she ends up being the mother the kids truly needed. Still, Susan, Jaime, and Ada manage to lead a decent life.

I am very excited to share this book with students who read The War That Saved My Life last school year. I don’t think I have posted about this book before, at least not on WordPress. ( Log Out /  The story builds on the characters from the first story with the addition of one important character, Ruth. She can ride her horse, Butter. She can lead a normal life. Lord Thorton is doing top secret work for the British government. My own daughter read part of it and I’m asking her to read it again and then read the sequel. However, the government takes over Lady Thorton’s home for war purposes, leaving her to move in with them in the cottage. Have you read “The War That Saved My Life”? Often, abused children can’t get over the abuse and believe, at least on some level, that since their mother treated them that way, they must deserve it. But then, last week I got in a new order of books and the book that cured my readers block was in it.

Susan learns that Ada’s mother has been killed in a bombing and the children are officially orphans. Yet, generosity and heroism shows through in the simplest human daily acts that will warm your heart. My 9 yr.old granddaughter loves to read. This is World War II and the war is raging all around them in England. It will serve to remind readers that sometimes, our fear of rejection can serve to isolate us from others, and that even with that very real possibility, it’s worth reaching out to others. Lord Thorton is away working in secret, Maggie is at boarding school, and her brother is in the Royal Air Force.

It’s an amazing novel, and now the highly anticipated sequel, The War I Finally Won, is almost here. Yet at one point, Lord Thorton says that as the government has learned more about Hitler’s agenda, he at least knows that fighting Hitler is a just cause and that those who died in the war died fighting for the side of right. She has never left the flat in her entire life because she has a club foot. Ada is both annoyed by and envious of the emotional ease with which her little brother, Jamie, seems to have adapted to their new life with Susan, their guardian, in this sequel to The War That Saved My Life. She read 'The War That Saved My Life' and couldn't stop talking about how good it was. Annoying, but very cute. Teachers (and parents) will love the many messages that resonate throughout the book. It’s that awful limbo where you know you should be reading but you can’t find a book to hold your interest and you are always finding something else to do. An important part of Ada’s struggle is to learn that she’s worthy of love. Excellent historical read, dealing with profound war topics such as the Holocaust and death and the whys of war. I had an extremely busy summer working at the public library and I had an anxious few months while I waited to hear if I would get my dream job, the Children’s Librarian position in the public library. The War I Finally Won begins with Ada receiving the surgery to correct her club foot, a surgery she should have had as a baby. ( Log Out /  Ada has incredible inner strength though, and teaches herself to walk, though it is excruciatingly painful.
I think I have had a case of readers block since August.

She makes friends with a girl her age and she and Jamie begin to have a normal childhood. I really enjoyed the first book. These books are so very honest and real. Ada is a girl living in the East End slums of London with her Mam and her younger brother, Jamie. At the end of the first book, Ada and her brother have returned to Kent with Susan, the person who has cared for them and loved them since they went to stay with her as evacuees from London and the Nazis’ bombs.
