Also why wouldn't the doctor have saved the Earth from this? The show has always acted like, despite there being time travel, that there is a unified timeline. I liked Orphan 55 too. Either by reading the Master’s mind or another Time Lord’s, I started out really loving it.

'Orphan 55' would have been really great, had the fact that it was actually planet Earth been explicit from the start, and the main plot actually directly related to the Aesop. 289. I read fan reviews and comments before I watched the episode and I was expecting the worst episode of all time, like Mystery Science Theater level of silliness.

I think this was the problem for me as well; I didn't hate the episode, it was still watch-able, but the message felt too 'vague' (okay "save the Earth" but how tho?!) Obviously the old woman shouting BENNI! There were too many characters trying to have their moments and some parts that could have been edited or rewritten, but overall it wasn't horrible. No. Which is weird because normally when there is a bad episode critically then I am on board with the bandwagon of hate. A community dedicated to discussions and news for Doctor Who. Okay so after about 24 hours of twitter sharing their opinions on last nights episode I think it is fair to say that Orphan 55 was rather disliked. When she said this I's just one possible future, I confused the hell out of me because when has that ever been the case. People bash this episode for being boring or stupid, but I'm thankful I got one where plot actually goes somewhere for a change and everything seems to serve some purpose. I would appreciate a line later in the series where the Doctor eventually tells her companions about Gallifrey’s fate and compares it to Orphan 55. I feel like the show is wasting the talents of those who work on it. All that boosts it from a 0/10 to a 5/10 for me. User account menu. I mean, I do prefer this sort of hot mess to S11 blandness. I thought it was always a single timeline that could change between certain fixed points, not multiple timelines. Chibnall did some of the social awakwardness as well in Spyfall: Part One so I hope it's going to be a personality trait that sticks around. Shaky stories are much easier to take when you've got a good Doctor as an anchor and 13 is progressing along well this series. I'm glad I didn't know it was the same writer as It Takes You Away because I think I would have been more disappointed as I loved that episode. But I don't see that happening. Because the important message of the episode came from a subplot unrelated to the main tension to do with the monsters and rescue mission, there wasn't enough focus on it and the "moral of the story" at the end, while relevant, is simply too vague to challenge viewers. I just think it needed some editing and a couple more drafts.

I don't think the episode needed to be a two parter. A fun, campy episode with a darkly comic undertone 7/10, it made the episode feel heavily contrived as the odds of them coming across a planet which was earth, despite there being 54 others like this one that they quite easily could have landed on, was ridiculous. I was a little disappointed that it didn’t directly relate to the overarching plot, but it was a fun episode anyway. This also meant that James Buckley’s character was severely underused and came across as stunt casting more than anything. She felt the most Doctorish to me yet. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. Click to see spoiler. We even see how it ends! It wasn't all that deep but it was very tense, exciting and unpredictable, and oddly enough how rushed the character arcs felt added to the pace. Click to see spoiler. I totally agree. The thing is: I don't disagree with a lot of negative opinions on here. Despite that, Series 12 continues to be a massive improvement for the 13th Doctor.

This episode's concluding speech from the Doctor makes it so that there are multiple concurrent timelines happening simultaneously. If you go and watch some older episodes and understand how good Doctor Who used to be (and can be) you'll understand why we don't like this Children's BBC version. The worst thing Doctor Who can be is bland. spoiler. Orphan 55 spoiler. There were a lot of stupid inconsistencies (fire w/o oxygen), nonsensical character motivations, and it had the preachiest ending ever that made Kill the Moon seem subtle (I don't even disagree with the message, but it felt like a straight-up lecture). Just suddenly changing the rules like that. Moderator of r/gallifrey Archived. But it's not my least favorite by far. I've really enjoyed her so far, but this was a step up for me. Cookies help us deliver our Services. Orphan 55 spoiler. I guess the main thing is: I'd rather have a sporadic hot mess of an episode, rather than a bland one. Another big issue I had was the ending. It wasn't all that deep but it was very tense, exciting and unpredictable, and oddly enough how rushed the character arcs felt added to the pace. The frantic pacing gave it that action movie vibe that at least makes it stand out from other episodes with no personality to call their own and it led me to shut my brain off from some of things that are silly in retrosepct. I mean I know it was supposed to be heartfelt and tearful, evocative blah blah but gah! 'Orphan 55' would have been really great, had the fact that it was actually planet Earth been explicit from the start, and the main plot actually directly related to the Aesop. I liked Orphan 55 too. 176.

Yeah, I don’t get it either. Still. share. I think it had serious issues but it was still enjoyable and I really don’t get why it’s getting the insane amount of hate that it is getting.
it was all going so well and then they did that and I burst out laughing! New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. This is a shame because he gave a great performance and his son was really likeable as well for such a young actor. Additionally, I thought the Doctor couldn't change his/her timeline, so by going there it would seem like it would cause it to be a fixed point in time. And Jodie's acting has been much more self assured this season. Press J to jump to the feed. Like the Doctor's convenient come and go magic powers to fix everything, and the fact there's no oxygen on the planet's surface despite the fact there's an species that breathes it out and they don't actually consume it. I mean the Doctor in previous seasons had so much conflict with the old rules it just defanged these events since they can just brush it off as a what if scenario. I figure my expectations are pretty low at this point.

Orphan 55. spoiler. Russian tunnels in a post-apocalyptic landscape where a lack of breathable air is a big concern with mutant creatures that look like this.

Plus, the "Fam" is finally seeing The Doctor isn't always this perfect endless ray of sunshine, can be secretive, and that life in the TARDIS isn't always fun and games.

I was super confused too because up to this point in the series the Earths Timeline has been pretty laid out. The only way her argument that it was a possible timeline that could be changed is if Graham, Ryan, and Yaz become global environmental activists upon returning to their timeline, and thus actively change the future. "Orphan 55" indicates there are 55+ Orphan class planets catalogued. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. ), too many plot threads (some of which were utterly nonsensical, underdeveloped, or both), and had overly preachy moments. save hide report.

Wow, that is SHOCKINGLY similar. It needed a lot of the excess nonsense removed. Only Orphan 55 had a spa. 673 comments . I guess my expectations were just lowered so much from S11, that the positives really stuck with me more than the negatives. I like that Ed Hime in both his episodes has given Ryan more personality than normal by portraying him as socially awkward.

because the bulk of the episode's narrative had nothing at all to do with environmentalism. But we rushed through all of that in the first 5 minutes, and from then on it was just baffling decisions from the screenwriters and the characters. I'm going to re-watch it at some point to see if I change my mind. Why did the entire group (including the child and the elderly woman) go on the rescue mission? Press J to jump to the feed.

Like maybe a first part ending with finding the sign showing they were on earth, it would have been an interesting cliff hanger. But Tranquility spa was the "first off-world FAKEcation", as said in the episode. The second they made it earth I knew it was going wrong though and that speech at the end was the type of annoying badly written crap that made me stop watching S1 of TNG. For two main reasons. Moderator of r/doctorwho Archived. Out of all the planets to put a spa on they just happen to do it on the same planet which they arrive at. The idea of the fake-cation on an orphan planet was really interesting. As opposed to, say, 'Rosa', which stayed on-message throughout the runtime. lol). Honestly, I will continue watching. Close. I like 13 having a "mood" and being more in command of the situation like her male predecessors (now THAT'S equality), I liked Ryan and Graham, and I thought the Dregs had a great design that lent the episode some palpable tension. Did the actors not laugh while filming it? Loved it. Took control, got all the rest of the survivors killed because she neglected to prepare the escape route and endangered everyone for no good reason. If they hadn’t teased that then I would have been perfectly fine but seeing as this is BIG in the BBC’s minds I feel quite sour towards it. Posted by 7 months ago. Their whole this is that the Earth is protected and they are protecting it. The second they made it earth I knew it was going wrong though and that speech at the end was the type of annoying badly written crap that made me stop watching S1 of TNG. I'm sure they already knew that, but c'mon, Yaz just saw an elderly woman go on a suicide mission to buy the rest of them some time, the bland innocence from Series 11 is officially dead. All I can say is to hell with reading fan reviews and reaction threads. I thought it was alright, not my favourite but not the disaster I keep hearing about. Orphan 55 causes problems. The sharp teeth, the enlarged gums with no lips, the mandibles, the pale skin, the skinless, muscular appearance, the head shape... surely that can't be a coincidence.

So many issues with the writing, but overall I’m just sad with how the interesting concepts were wasted. Press J to jump to the feed. Posted by 7 months ago. 96% Upvoted. This thread is archived. I felt this episode really contradicted the show's established time-travel lore. It should have been an allegorical planet. Yeah that pissed me off too. Who thought that was cute? I think my general feelings of dissatisfaction about Doctor Who is that it feels story-wise and budget-wise like it's a step back. This felt like it came out of the blue for me, and thus for the first time the message annoyed me.

Everyone seems too emotional and every episode is the worst episode of all time, apparently.

Did Doctor Who buy the rights to Metro 2033 or something?? And when they shared a final look and each sucked their thumbs? Yeah, that's way too close to be coincidental. I don't need real world politics and issues being so ham fisted into my down time. Yeah I must be a fake fan because for all but the last 2 minutes I was thinking "this really feels like doctor who". He has been one of the few writers to flesh out Ryan.
