But we hope you won't! Gabrielle Lewis-Dodson Time has been good to Sandy Wilson’s 1953 musical.

THE EDITORIAL TEAM |

This musical has become, for the most part, something of a period piece – when Maisie (Gabrielle Lewis-Dodson) has a number of male suitors to choose from for a ball that evening, Bobby Van Husen (Jack Butterworth), Marcel (Peter Nash), Alphonse (Tom Bales) and Pierre (Ryan Carter) all determine that it is she who must listen to them, without reciprocity. The Boy Friend takes place at a southern French finishing school where taboo boy friends pop in through the girls' windows to dance and sing the night away. The casting news comes after the revival announcement earlier this month.

The Boy Friend opened in London in 1953, before a West End run in 1954, and ran for more than 5 years. Sandy Wilson’s all-singing all-dancing love letter to 1920s musical comedies returns for the first major London revival in over 10 years. Sandy Wilson's all-singing all-dancing love letter to 1920s musical comedies returns for the first major London revival in over 10 years.

The Boy Friend will enjoy a relatively long run at London's Menier Chocolate Factory from 22 November 2019 until 7 March 2020.

The subsequent Broadway run in 1954 made a star of the then-unknown Julie Andrews.

The Boyfriend is directed by Matthew White, associate director and choreography by Bill Deamer, design by Paul Farnsworth, lighting design by Paul Anderson, sound design by Gregory Clarke, hair and wig design by Richard Mawbey, musical supervisor and director by Simon Beck with orchestrations by David Cullen.

If it’s only a room he’s after, he could get one for as ‘little’ as £300,000 – not that I would advise anyone to fork out that much for what is essentially a large box made of bricks. A major revival of Sandy Wilson’s The Boy Friend will run at the Menier Chocolate Factory over Christmas. Some rather ridiculous French accents were a source of amusement for some, but I found them simply unfunny. It also appears to have escaped almost everyone involved with the revival at the Menier Chocolate Factory that Sandy Wilson wrote The Boy Friend in … Beverley Klein's previous theatre credits include Young Chekhov Trilogy (National Theatre), Six Characters in …

As the young lovers, Amara Okereke and Dylan Mason, dwelling on the imagined delights of A Room in Bloomsbury, have the right air of rhapsodic innocence.

Ken Russell adapted it into a 1971 film with Twiggy who won two Golden Globes for her performance. Rather as if they were trying to catch attention at a debutantes ball, the young ladies at Madame Dubonnet’s villa in Nice can hardly say or do anything without striking a pose, emitting a simpering giggle or widening their eyes in exaggerated astonishment.

His delicious score, embracing tap, tango and a two-step, is a positive invitation to dance that Bill Deamer’s choreography eagerly accepts: Won’t You Charleston With Me?

I enjoyed the dancing – Bill Deamer’s choreography is enthusiastic and energetic, and sat as close as one does in the Menier, the effort this hard-working cast puts in is very much evident. Sandy Wilson’s The Boyfriend is to receive a major revival at the Menier Chocolate Factory this Christmas directed by Matthew White. It’s one of those ‘sit back, relax and enjoy’ shows – nothing more and nothing less, an agreeable evening of escapism. “A gentleman never feels too weak/ To pat a pink arm or pinch a cheek” this randy Brit abroad used to sing in “It’s Never Too Late To Fall in Love”; the lyrics have been modified here, with added business that ensures the young object of his desire is kept safely out of reach, while his imperious wife (Issy Van Randwyck), face shielded by a fan, lip-syncs her cooing replies. Ephram is a jack of all trades and enjoys attending theatre, classical music concerts and the opera. It could all be rather enervating but the sheer polish and panache of the cast’s fluttering antics brings a smile to the lips – and Wilson introduced a soupcon of reality to offset the artifice. The production sees Matthew White renew his collaboration with the Menier – he previously directed She Loves Me, Candide, Sweet Charity (also West End), Little Shop of Horrors (also West End) and The Last Five Years.

Design – Paul Farnsworth from smiling so much. It harks back to a time when things were less frantic, and people had time to stop for a conversation without being rushed off their feet, is quite refreshing to see – nobody here continues on their way, with a quick, “Another time, perhaps?” as they dash off to wherever they are going. The most memorable moment for me was ‘Poor Little Pierrette’, quite a late musical number that sees Madame Dubonnet (Janie Dee), a headmistress, and Polly Browne (Amara Okereke), one of her pupils, bring the house down with their glorious voices. The one potential pitfall is a comedy number in which Adrian Edmondson as an ageing aristocrat hymns the virtues of mature passion assuring us that “a fiddle that’s old is more in tune”. Robert Portal, as her long-lost beau, delivers the line: “I was a fool to pretend the old Percy was dead” with an admirably straight face and Tiffany Graves, as an all-purpose maid, puts across It’s Nicer in Nice with great zest while reminding us that Wilson cleverly deployed the Cole Porter technique of creating lyrics out of a long list.
